How to Change the Pads on Your ZOLL AED Plus

The ZOLL AED Plus uses ZOLL CPR-D-padz, a one-piece, pre-connected electrode that also powers the device's Real CPR Help feedback. Changing your ZOLL AED Plus replacement pads takes a couple of minutes, needs no tools, and doesn't even require switching the unit on. Here's exactly how to do it.

Before You Start

• Check the expiry date on the new CPR-D-padz packaging. Pads should be used before their expiration date, which is 5 years from the date of manufacture.
• Have your new, sealed CPR-D-padz set ready. Only use packs that are unopened and undamaged.
• You don't need to turn the AED Plus on to change the pads; the whole swap is done with the unit off.

Step 1: Open the AED Plus lid
Lift the lid of the AED Plus to access the electrode compartment where the old pads and cable sit.

Step 2: Disconnect the old pads
Unplug the used or expired CPR-D-padz cable connector from the AED Plus unit and remove the old electrode packet from the compartment. If this is the first time you've changed the pads since buying the unit, you may find them taped to the inside of the lid. That's normal, just peel them free.

Step 3: Open the new CPR-D-padz packaging
Open the cardboard outer box only. Don't unfold or separate the pads yet; they stay folded and preconnected until you're ready to use them on a patient. Leave the foil pouch around the pads sealed; it protects the gel and adhesive until the pads are used or reach their expiry date. You can also find that pads come with a rescue kit that helps you prep the casualty before applying the pads.

Step 4: Connect the new pads
Plug the new CPR-D-padz cable into the electrode port on the AED Plus unit.

Step 5: Thread the expiry-date tab through the lid slit
Feed the fluorescent expiry-date tab on the electrode packet through the small slit in the lid. Once it's threaded through, you can check the pads' expiry date at a glance without opening the lid again.

Step 6: Pack the pads into the compartment
Fold the electrode packet neatly and tuck it, along with the connected cable, into the pad compartment inside the lid.

Step 7: Close the lid
Close the AED Plus cover fully. It can feel a little stiff, push until you hear it click shut, which confirms it's properly closed.

Step 8: Run a check-out test
Turn the unit on and listen for the “Unit OK” voice prompt, followed by the correct “Adult Pads” or “Pediatric Pads” message confirming the new pads are detected. Turn the unit back off.

Step 9: Confirm the status indicator
Wait two minutes, then check the status indicator window on the left side of the handle. A green check mark confirms the AED Plus is ready for service; a red X means something needs attention. 

Pad Expiry, Storage & Pediatric Use

• CPR-D-padz are suitable for adults and children over 8 years old (or over 55 lbs / 25 kg). For younger or lighter patients, under 8 years old or under 25kg, use ZOLL Pedi-padz II instead; they follow exactly the same changing procedure described above.
• Keep the electrode cable connected to the AED Plus at all times, even in storage; the unit relies on it for its self-test routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to turn on my ZOLL AED Plus to change the pads?

No. Disconnecting the old CPR-D-padz, connecting the new set, and repacking the compartment are all done with the unit switched off. You only turn it on afterwards to run the checkout test.

How do I know when my ZOLL AED Plus pads have expired?

Every CPR-D-padz set has a fluorescent expiry-date tab. Thread it through the slit in the AED Plus lid when you fit new pads, and you'll be able to check the date at a glance without opening the unit. CPR-Dpadz last 5 years from their date of manufacture.

Can I use CPR-D-padz on a child?

CPR-D-padz are intended for patients over 8 years old or over 55 lbs (25kg). For younger or lighter patients, use ZOLL Pedi-padz II,  they fit and change in exactly the same way as CPR-D-padz.

How often should I replace my ZOLL AED Plus pads?
