The ZOLL AED Plus replacement battery set contains 10 × Duracell Type 123 Lithium batteries,  the only battery specification authorised by ZOLL for use in the AED Plus defibrillator.

The ZOLL AED Plus is engineered with a dual-redundant battery system: the 10 batteries are arranged as two independent sets of five. If one set of five cells fails, the other five continue to power the device, ensuring uninterrupted rescue-readiness until you can perform a planned replacement. This is why the complete set of 10 batteries must be replaced together, and why the installation order matters; partial or incorrectly ordered sets disrupt the redundant circuitry and cause self-test failures.

As ZOLL's authorised UK distributor, Defib Store supplies replacement batteries to the same organisations that rely on the AED Plus itself, UK ambulance services, NHS trusts, local councils, and thousands of businesses registered under their Health and Safety obligations. Every set is supplied with step-by-step installation instructions and is backed by Defib Store's free pads and battery expiry reminder service.

What Battery Does the ZOLL AED Plus Take?

The ZOLL AED Plus takes 10 × Duracell Type 123 Lithium batteries (also called CR123A Lithium). ZOLL's firmware is calibrated specifically for Duracell Lithium cells; this is not a standard battery available in supermarkets or from generic Amazon sellers.

The key distinction:

  • Correct: Duracell Type 123 Lithium (ZOLL part number 8000-0807-01), available from authorised distributors including Defib Store
  • Incorrect: Generic CR123A batteries, own-brand CR123A cells, or standard Duracell CR123A photo batteries not supplied to ZOLL's specification

Non-authorised batteries may appear identical but will cause your ZOLL AED Plus to fail its monthly 200J self-test, often without a clear warning indicator. A device running non-authorised batteries may show a red X but remain otherwise silent, leaving it non-rescue-ready until the issue is identified.

How to Replace ZOLL AED Plus Batteries - Step by Step

ZOLL AED Plus battery replacement takes under 5 minutes and requires no tools. The most common mistake is installing the batteries in the wrong order. Always follow the sequence below.

Step-by-step replacement

  1. Open the battery compartment.  Turn the device over. The battery compartment is on the back, and the notches are located at the bottom edge of the compartment. Insert a coin or car key into the notches and lift the lid until you hear a click.
  2. Remove all 10 old batteries. Dispose of used lithium batteries at a registered recycling point in accordance with WEEE regulations.
  3. After removing the batteries, wait approximately 20 seconds before putting batteries in the unit (the unit resets itself at this time)
  4. Insert the new batteries in the correct order:
    • Left column: insert 4 batteries, top to bottom
    • Right column: insert 4 batteries, top to bottom
    • Centre: insert the remaining 2 batteries, top to bottom
Ensure the positive (+) and negative (−) terminals of each battery match the markers inside the compartment.
  5.  You will now hear prompts after 10-20 seconds. You should hear the command 'adult pads', then after another 10 seconds, you will hear the command 'if new batteries press button'
  6. Press the blue button above the 2 centre batteries
  7. Put the battery cover back on

After installation - confirming rescue-readiness

After pressing the Blue Button, the ZOLL AED Plus will perform an automatic self-test. Check the status indicator on the front of the device:

  • Green tick: Self-test passed. The device is rescue-ready.
  • Red X:  If there is a red 'X' in the window, switch the unit on. After the defibrillator initialises, the red 'X' should have turned to a green tick.

Now switch the unit back off

Note: Prior to battery reset, please ensure the pad cable is plugged in (pad cable is located under the front lid). The pad cable must be plugged in at all times, or the unit will continue to fault with a red cross.

If the red X persists, then contact Defib Store on 01298 872 186 or email support@defibstore.co.uk quoting the serial number of the unit (located on the rear starting 21(X)...). You can also request an emergency call-out service if you're a DefibSure member

How to Check Your ZOLL AED Plus Battery Status

The ZOLL AED Plus monitors its own battery status automatically and continuously. You do not need to manually test the batteries.

  • Green tick ✓ in the status window:  Device has passed its most recent self-test (default weekly, plus a full 200J test monthly). No action required.
  • Red X ✗ in the status window/device beeping:  The device has detected a problem. Check battery and electrode expiry dates immediately and replace any expired consumables.

Defibstore's free pads and battery expiry reminder service will notify you before your consumables expire, so your device never reaches a self-test failure from an avoidable expiry.

Why Is My ZOLL AED Plus Beeping?

A beeping ZOLL AED Plus has failed its automatic self-test. The four most common causes are:

  • Batteries have expired: 5-year shelf life. Replace with authorised Duracell Type 123 Lithium set.
  • Batteries were installed in the wrong order: Re-install following the left → right → centre sequence and press the Blue Button to confirm.
  • Non-authorised batteries fitted: Generic CR123A cells cause firmware calibration failures. Replace with the authorised set.
  • Electrode pads have expired: CPR-D-padz also have a 5-year life. A pad expiry triggers the same self-test failure regardless of battery status.

If beeping persists after replacing batteries and pads with authorised components, call our team on 01298 872 186.
