The Primedic HeartSave myPAD battery is the single component that determines whether your defibrillator is ready when it is needed most. When a cardiac arrest occurs, there is no time to question whether the device will respond. Replacing it on schedule is one of the most straightforward things you can do to fulfil your duty of care, and one of the most commonly neglected.

This replacement battery is compatible with the full Primedic HeartSave myPAD range, including the Core and Connect models in both semi-automatic and fully-automatic configurations. It is non-rechargeable, certified to MDR standards, and carries enough capacity to deliver 130 full shocks at 200 joules, far more than most emergencies will ever demand.

This page explains what the battery does, who should buy it, when it needs replacing, and how to avoid the quiet gaps in AED readiness that only become apparent in an emergency.

Key Features of the myPad battery

  • Up to 5 year shelf life
  • 130 full shocks at 200 joules
  • At least 6 shocks remaining when low - battery alert is triggered
  • MDR approved
  • Compatible with Primedic HeartSave myPAD (Core and Connect)

Non-Rechargeable Design

The most common question we receive about this battery is whether it can be recharged. It cannot. The LiMnO₂ chemistry is a single-use design with a defined shelf life. This is not a limitation; it is by design. It maintains stable, consistent voltage throughout its operational life, which means the device receives the same quality of power whether the battery is new or approaching the end of its five-year life.

5 Year Shelf Life

The replacement trigger for this battery is time-based. Under normal operating conditions, with the battery installed in a device that is performing its scheduled self-tests, you should plan for replacement at the five-year mark from installation. The risk is not the expiry itself -- it is failing to track it. An unrecorded installation date means no basis for scheduling replacement, and organisations can unknowingly run an expired battery in a life-critical device. Our free expiry reminder service eliminates this risk: register your battery on purchase and we will notify you before it is due.

5 Things to keep in mind when you buy a myPAD battery

Waiting for the Low-Battery Alarm

By the time your HeartSave myPAD displays a low-battery alert or issues a voice prompt indicating the battery is almost empty, the device is already in a degraded state. At that point, the battery has enough capacity for a minimum of six shocks at 200 joules. That is sufficient for most emergencies, but it is not a position to be in if delivery is delayed or the battery deteriorates further before use. The low-battery alert is not an early warning; it is a final warning. Proactive replacement, scheduled before the five-year mark, eliminates this risk.

No Record of Installation Date

In organisations where AED management is passed between individuals over time, it is common for the installation date of the current battery to go unrecorded. Without that date, there is no reliable basis for scheduling a replacement. Our free expiry reminder service is designed for exactly this situation. Register your battery at the point of purchase, and we will notify you before it is due, regardless of how personnel or internal processes change over the following years. You can also email us at info@defibstore.co.uk, and we can send you a template checklist that you can place in a file with your defibrillator.

Unnecessary Reinsertion and Self-Tests

Every time the battery is removed and reinserted, the HeartSave myPAD runs a full self-test cycle. Self-tests draw on battery capacity. This is not a significant concern if it happens occasionally, but repeatedly removing and replacing the battery for inspection purposes will reduce its service life over time. Let the device run its scheduled self-tests on its own programme. If you need to confirm the device is functioning, check the status indicator.

Post-Rescue Battery Management

After a device has been used in a cardiac arrest, organisations often assume the battery needs immediate replacement alongside the electrode pads. In most cases, this is not necessary. The pads must always be replaced after use. The battery should be assessed via the device's self-test before a replacement decision is made. With 130 shocks at 200 joules available, a single rescue event uses a small fraction of the total capacity. If the device passes its self-test and the battery remains within its shelf life, it can continue in service.

Storage and Environment

The Primedic HeartSave myPAD operates within a temperature range of 0°C to 55°C. Within that range, the device will function as intended.

For devices in standard indoor environments, offices, schools, sports facilities, and public buildings, this range presents no practical concern. For devices in outdoor cabinets or environments subject to significant temperature variation, the installation location matters. Excessive heat over time accelerates battery self-discharge. Extreme cold can affect the battery's immediate output, particularly in the first moments of a rescue.

If your AED is installed outdoors or in an unheated space, a thermostatically controlled cabinet is the appropriate solution. The Defibstore 4000 cabinet maintains a stable internal temperature regardless of external conditions, protecting both the battery and the electrode pads year-round. For outdoor or exposed installations, this is not an optional extra, it is the right way to ensure the device remains fully operational.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this battery need to be replaced after a rescue?

Not always. The electrode pads must always be replaced immediately after any use. The battery does not require automatic replacement following a cardiac arrest event. With 130 shocks at 200 joules available, a single rescue consumes a small fraction of total capacity. After any use, allow the device to complete its self-test. If the test passes and the battery is within its shelf life, it can remain in service. If you are uncertain, contact us, and we will talk you through the post-rescue checklist.

Is this battery rechargeable?

No. The Primedic HeartSave myPAD battery uses a non-rechargeable lithium manganese dioxide (LiMnO₂) chemistry. It operates for up to five years from installation, or until a self-test flags a fault. It should not be connected to any charging source.

Which defibrillators is this battery compatible with?

This battery is compatible with the full Primedic HeartSave myPAD range: the Core and Connect models, in both semi-automatic and fully-automatic configurations. It is not compatible with any other Primedic model. If you are unsure whether your device is within the myPAD range, check the label on the front of your defibrillator or contact us before purchasing.

How do I dispose of the old battery?

Lithium batteries must not go in the general household or commercial waste. Disposal must be through a battery recycling centre, in line with your local council instructions or your nearest Tescos. Do not puncture, crush, or incinerate the battery, and keep it away from heat sources during storage before disposal.
