How to Change the Battery on Your ZOLL AED 3 

The ZOLL AED 3 runs on a single non-rechargeable lithium battery pack with up to 5 years' shelf life. Swapping it takes a couple of minutes and needs no tools.

Before You Start 

• Turn the AED 3 off before you begin
• Check the new battery pack hasn't passed its "install by" date, printed on the label. 
• Note the date you're installing the battery and add 5 years to it; that gives you an approximate expiry date to track, separate from the "install by" date on the pack. 

Step 1: Turn the unit around and access the battery

With the AED 3 facing away from you, slide the pad pack, the rescue kit sits alongside it, out of its compartment on the back of the unit. This reveals the battery compartment underneath. The pads stay connected by their cable the whole time; you're only sliding the folded packet out of its holder, not unplugging anything.

Step 2: Remove the old battery

Place your fingers into the wells either side of the battery compartment, squeeze the side tabs, and pull the battery straight out. Dispose of it responsibly; the lithium content is harmful if it ends up in general waste. Recycle Now can help you find your nearest battery recycling point.

Step 3: Insert the new battery

Hold the new battery by its side tabs and slide it into the compartment, lining up the notch on the battery with the matching shape in the battery well. Push until it clicks into place.

Step 4: Slide the pad pack back into place

Return the pad pack and rescue kit to its compartment on the back of the unit, the same way it came out.

Step 5: Let the self-test run

The self-test starts automatically the moment the new battery is inserted; you don't need to press anything to prompt it. Once it starts, you'll see a battery icon on the screen, it can occasionally show slightly less than a full charge, since manufacturers test the battery before it ships to you.

Step 6: Confirm the unit is ready

Listen for the “Unit OK” voice prompt and check for the green tick in the status indicator window beside the On/Off button; that confirms the new battery and pads are properly installed, and the AED 3 is ready for service.

Note:

• Standby life is up to 5 years once installed, though frequent self-testing or a poor Wi-Fi signal (if selftest reporting is switched on) can shorten that.

Do I need to turn off my ZOLL AED 3 to change the battery?
