What the 9V battery does:

It's a spare 9V lithium battery that powers the Active Status Indicator, a green light on the device that blinks periodically to show the defibrillator is ready for use. It also has its own low-power alert: both a visual signal and an audible beep let you know when the 9V battery itself needs replacing. The 9V battery lasts for up to 2 years. The manufacturer recommends that the 9-volt lithium battery be changed when replacing the electrodes, approximately every 2 years.
